Trusting God for 2020… January Ministry Update

Trusting God for 2020… January Ministry Update

Posted by Kathy Carlin
As Serving in Jesus’ Name starts its 4th year as a ministry, we look back at what the Lord has enabled us to do with delight and forward to what lies ahead with anticipation.  The massiveness of the need and the smallness of our resources would overwhelm us should we forget the work is the Lord’s, not ours. As we commit all we do to Him (Proverbs 16:3), being faithful to do the work before us with committed hearts, working as if for the Lord, not ourselves (Colossians 3:23), we can be assured our efforts will not be in vain.

Choosing our Kenyan projects for 2020 will not be easy.  As we get to know more about the facilities through the deepening relationship Immaculate is developing with the administrators and children, we keenly feel the needs of the orphanages we provide support to and desire to complete all the pressing projects before us.  But choose we must, so we are intently seeking the Lord’s direction and trusting Him to provide what is needed to carry out the projects He desires us to do.

Since Jesus is the light of the world and darkness cannot extinguish His light (John 1:5), we could not find a better way to kick off the new year than to turn on the lights at the Magodo Orphanage, home to 57 children in Nairobi, Kenya.  In this land of contrasts where a laborer in the western region makes $10 a day, electricity is expensive.  Magodo, which receives no government support, has been unable to afford this luxury for many months.  This need particularly touches our hearts since this facility has been especially industrious in using the sewing machines we sent.  Therefore, to provide this large household with adequate electricity, we are contracting with a well-established German company to install solar panels on Magodo’s sun-drenched roof. With the 10-year life expectancy for the batteries and the system’s five-year guarantee, we feel this is a sound investment in the future of the Magodo children.

We are at near capacity for the container, and hope to ship in mid-March. Each facility will receive at least 20 boxes filled with all kinds of wonderful treasures, even some furniture. Our plan is for Immaculate to make three deliveries over the year, taking food and a third of the boxes on each trip.  In recognition that every good thing and perfect gift comes from our Father in heaven (James 1:17), with each visit, Immaculate will host a celebration with the children to thank the Lord for His goodness, love, and provision.

Even with the boxes designated for the orphanages, rescue centers, and senior men’s home, we will still be sending around 300 boxes for distribution to other facilities with children in need of basic necessities. One such facility is the Mirembe Primary School, which provides education to 900 children. The overall conditions are poor, but the classroom for the 70 children between 5 and 6 years old is heartbreaking.  Lord willing, we will build a new classroom for the precious little boys and girls attending there, so their first experience in the outside world will help give them the sense that they are valuable, worthy of the best their school has to offer, not a mud shack. Below are photos of a classroom for 5-6 year olds at the Mirembe Primary School in Western Kenya:

As always, we are grateful to all those who support us with prayers, financial contributions, donated articles, and help sorting, packing, and transporting boxes.  “May the Lord grant each of you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Blessings,
        Kathy Carlin, Executive Director

Other Activities at Serving in Jesus’ Name in January:

  • The materials for the 750 children to make salvation by the color bracelets in the school and orphanage run by Faith & Love in Action are finally on their way to Haiti via container.  Caitlin Terry from Hydromissions had planned to carry them on her next trip, but the political environment makes travel there just too dangerous.

Each child will get the Scripture card below in Haitian Creole to reinforce the meaning of the beads.

  • Immaculate will be meeting with Joseph Kavuli, Child Evangelism Fellowship Regional Director for East and Central Africa, in the next week to make plans to start Good News Clubs in the facilities within our network.
  • The local Amway Leadership Development Team selected Serving in Jesus’ Name to receive a large collection of its products, so the children and their caretakers in Kenya will be enjoying the rich lotions, soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, toiletries, and household products Amway produces.
  • We donated another 200 Bibles to OneVoice since they already gave out the 200 Bibles we gave them in December.  OneVoice now has Jesus’ Club in 4 local VA high schools,
  • 24 of our 29 available frames have been “adopted” by friends who will fill them with a Scripture message to adorn the typically blank walls in the orphanages.  We are trusting the Lord will use the Word of Truth hanging on the walls to increase the children’s faith (Romans 10:17).
