Packing and Patience… June Ministry Update

Packing and Patience… June Ministry Update

Posted by Kathy Carlin
Kenya is still closed to shipments, so both we and our container wait for the Lord’s perfect timing.  We are striving to wait with thankful, trusting hearts, believing the Lord will clear the way at precisely the right time (Proverbs 3:5-6).  We praise God for the opportunity to develop greater patience, the glorious fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) that enables us to accept disrupted plans with grace.  We rejoice in the hope of how the Lord will use our shipment once it reaches its destination (Romans 12:10-12), for we know our labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Some good news!  After months of working with Western Union, we can resume sending funds to Kenya.  Therefore, we are moving forward with the project at Mirembe Primary School in Western Kenya to replace the mud classroom where 50-60 children aged 5-6 attend school.  It breaks our hearts to think of these beautiful youngsters starting their school experience crammed into such a dark, unwelcoming space.  We are excited to be able to provide them with a bright, airy classroom where the Scripture inscribed around the room will be a reminder of God’s love for them.  As we pack boxes of books, school supplies, and toys for the 900 students at the school, we take joy in knowing each item will be treasured.

This project brings manifold blessings since we are providing work for our faithful construction crew who, due to the pandemic, have had no work since they finished the latrines and rainwater catchment system for us at St. Paul’s in May.  When Immaculate told the foreman the project was going forward, he exclaimed, “We can start tomorrow!”  They are waiting for the materials to be delivered, but they start demolition on Monday.  We can’t wait to get pictures of the children returning to school to their beautiful new classroom.

The Lord continues to inspire volunteers to carry out the ministry’s work in Kenya.  Immaculate manages all our projects, acting as estimator, purchasing agent, general contractor, and quality assurance expert.  She does wonders in stretching our limited funds to accomplish much more than we could imagine possible.  Blessedly, she has many people who have come beside her to create a network of trusted suppliers, construction workers, painters, and deliverymen, along with those who go into the facilities and villages to serve.

Through these often sad and scary times, we are grateful for the privilege of continuing to serve the Lord .  Our heartfelt thanks go out to each of you who support us by prayers, financial contributions, donating articles, working on projects, and helping to sort, pack, and transport boxes.  Be assured the God who sees us (Genesis 16:13), sees all that you do to serve others.

Blessings,

        Kathy Carlin, Executive Director

Other Ministry Activities in June

  • Delivered food to the Magodo Orphanage, which is located in the slums of Nairobi.   With the shutdown across the country, they were badly in need of these supplies.
  • Continued to work with the company selected to install solar energy at Magodo.
  • Started discussions with our friends and ministry partners, James and Jessica Koger, about our annual October outreach in Appalachia, where so many people are suffering from poverty.  We have a large collection of coats, hats, gloves, and boots stored in my attic in the hope that we will be able to continue this “tradition.”  Even in this time of national shutdown, James and Jessica have not been idle.

  • Continuing to collect items for our 2nd container, while waiting for the 1st container to ship.
  • Mounted and framed the tulip appliques, so sets will go to 4 orphanages with our next shipment.
