Laboring in faith together… November Ministry Update

Laboring in faith together… November Ministry Update

Posted by Kathy Carlin
Praise the Lord!  The container safely arrived in Kenya and has been moved from the Mombasa port to the clearance company’s lot.  Earnest, an agent with this company, has become our advocate, and he is attempting to clear it with the least expense possible.  We are grateful for him.

One of the blessings of ministering to others through Serving in Jesus’ Name is getting to labor beside amazing people of faith.  Seeing the sacrificial acts of kindness by those who themselves struggle to survive is not only inspiring, but humbling.  Roselyne Mwabishi, our volunteer ministry leader in the western region of Kenya, has truly been clothed with kindness (Colossians 3:12).  Although, her employment with the Kenyan government ended when she reached the mandatory retirement age, she feeds a dozen or more people each day in her home with vegetables grown on her small farm.  Since her pension will not start for one to two years due to a shortage of funds, she supports herself by selling produce, making $1-$2 a day.  Yet, after learning that Teresa, a widow with 11 grown children, was in constant pain from sleeping on sacks thrown over the hard dirt floor in her home, Roselyne donated money for the ministry to buy Teresa a mattress.
When the people who had come to hear Jesus speak were hungry and far from their homes, the Lord fed the 5,000 men with their wives and children from 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish (John 6:5-14).  By His grace, He has likewise enabled us to stretch our limited budget to include ovens in the new kitchens at Don Bosco, Ivugui, and ACK Kongoni.  Currently, all cooking at these facilities and the surrounding villages is done on stove tops or over open fires, so most of the children in these orphanages have never tasted bread or other baked goods.  However, Immaculate found Efedha who, although he is over 80 years old, delights in making highly-efficient wood-burning stoves and ovens.  By using heavy scrap metals and getting sharp discounts on the other materials, we are able to give these beloved children and their caretakers the gift of bread while we share the Good News about the Bread of Life with them (John 6:35).
Although the pandemic is preventing them from having having outreach campaigns in their area, the 50 adopted children in the Bewomi family continue to praise the Lord in their small church using the musical equipment we provided.  They are excited as they anticipate receiving boxes filled with treasures from the new shipment.

Other Activities at Serving in Jesus’ Name in November

  • We are putting the finishing touches on the water projects at Nangili primary and secondary schools, the latrines at Manyasa, and the library on the grounds of the Lumino School for Disabled Children.
  • Planning for 2021 continues.  Our goal is to form partnerships with local pastors to host praise, prayer, and training sessions to help single women and others without skills draw closer to the Lord even as they learn a craft to enable them to earn a living.
  • As Kenya lifts its shelter-in-place orders, we plan to resume discussions with Child Evangelism Fellowship staff about opening Good News Clubs in many of the facilities in our network.

Our sincere thanks to each of you who support SIJN through your prayers, financial contributions, and donated items.  We are grateful for each one of you.  May the Lord bless you for your generosity and bring you joy in knowing He sees every act of kindness done to those with great need (Matthew 25:45).

Blessings,
        Kathy Carlin, Executive Director
