Inspired by The Living Word

Inspired by The Living Word

Posted by Kathy Carlin

When we fall in love with Jesus, we fall in love with the Word of God. Jesus is the Word, the living Word, for “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).” Jesus is God’s love letter to the world, the embodiment of the written Word of God.

The lavish beauty of the Holy Scriptures leaves me speechless, breathless in my awe at how magnificently the Author portrays the images, teaches the lessons, and writes the messages. As a lover of great literature, I am overwhelmed at the creativity, originality, and poetry of its language while having the power to pierce our hearts, convict our minds, and inspire our souls.

While our words, like our lives, are fleeting, the Word of God endures forever (1 Peter 1:25). As a pillar of our faith, along with the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the promise of salvation through Jesus, the Son of God, our Savior and Lord, the Bible, the inspired Word of God (2 Timothy 3:6) stands throughout eternity for all people. When we mediate on the Word, the Holy Spirit testifies to our inner man, encouraging us, edifying us, correcting us, and training us in righteousness.

The Word is one of weapons in our arsenal as we resist the darkness of this world and pray for light to prevail. For no matter how deep the darkness, after we have done everything to stand, we can stand, therefore, having put on truth. Truth, the Word of God (John 17:17), which we have bound around our necks and written the tablets of our hearts (Proverbs 3:3) prepares us for battle. Other weapons in our arsenal are the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and the shield of faith, which comes from hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17).

The Word is lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path (Psalm 119:105). It guides our steps and directs us in the righteous way; when we store it in our hearts, it keeps us from sin (Psalm 119:10-11). To live life to the fullest, to be prosperous and have good success, we are to meditate on it day and night, being careful to do according to all that is written in it (Joshua 1:8).

By the grace of God, the leading of the Holy Spirit, with the power of the Word, we are able to respond to the Great Commission. Jesus tells us to come and then go. He says, “Come unto me all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:29). Come let us reason together, though you sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow, though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.” He embraces us like children, and He teaches us, and then He sends us out, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

He sends us to those with a heart of stone, that they might see a great light (Matthew 4:16) and be given a new heart, a heart of flesh and a new spirit (Ezekiel 36:26). He equips us with the Word, which is like fire; like a hammer that shatters rock (Jeremiah 23:29). It is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12–13). He sends us to the people sitting in darkness, so they might know the truth for the truth will set them free (John 8:32). He sends us with the Word in hand, for the word of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul (Psalm 19:7-9).

Praise God for His living, active, inspired, perfect, equipping, beautiful Word. It is in truth our Daily Bread, feeding us and sustaining us, working in us, strengthening our faith, and drawing us closer to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
