In July, we invited 25 teachers to attend a Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) seminar in Lumino, Western Kenya, to introduce them to CEF and invite them to an 8-day training course in August. We are delighted that all 25 teachers accepted our invitation and attended the training this month. They will now join the over 70 teachers previously trained in hosting Good News Clubs (Bible Clubs) for children in Western Kenya.
One cannot help admiring the people of Kenya for their faith in Christ and their resilience in spite of the deep poverty many experience. Immaculate Sifuna, a member of our Kenya team, recently shared the following reports:
A little boy named Gabriel captured our hearts when we first met him during a May visit to his school, Kosoki Primary. We noticed his ill-fitting clothing and that he had only eaten half of his snack. When we asked him about it, we learned he was saving part of his food to take home to his grandmother. His teacher later shared with us that he attends school as a charity case and that his family is desperately poor, which explained his lack of a uniform.
Our team made a surprise visit back to his school in July to celebrate this special child, whose selflessness had deeply touched us. We found Gabriel cheerful, humble, and happily attending his lessons. He shyly came forward when his name was called and our team led him into a room where he was given his own uniform along with two pairs of new shoes, a school bag, stationery, and other essentials. He was overwhelmed, and as he put on his new clothes, his eyes filled with tears. He returned to his class beaming! He then proudly cut the cake we had prepared for him and joyfully shared it with his classmates.
During our visit to Mufungu Primary School, our team showed a film about David and Goliath. Afterwards, Brian reminded them that, just like David, they may face giants in life such as poverty, fear, rejection or difficult circumstances, but those giants are never bigger than God. He encouraged them to trust the Lord with all their hearts because God delights in using ordinary people to do extraordinary things. After the children enjoyed a snack and played games with the toys the team brought them, the girls received a Dress-a-Girl dress, and the boys received socks and underwear. This was our first visit to Mufungu, and for many of the children these were the first new clothes they had ever owned.
Our ministry verse is “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). Teaching children to memorize Scripture is an essential part of our mission since memorized Scripture will serve as a constant reminder of God’s promises and devotion. We send verses in advance of a visit, so the children can memorize them and recite them during the gathering. Pictured is Blessing reciting John 14:6 during our visit to Lusweti Primary School.
