May 2024
Dear Friends,
By God’s grace, we are ahead of schedule in our plans to complete 20 building projects in 2024. Victor Mulati dedicated the new latrines and rainwater catchment system at the Great Hope Academy by sharing a Gospel message and giving thanks to the Lord for His provision. Victor has been the contractor on all of our nearly 100 construction projects. He also serves on our Kenyan Project Team, helps lead the initiative to expand Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) Good News Clubs in the western region, and teaches Sunday school. He is a frequent guest speaker at various churches where he shares the Gospel and hands out Bibles from our shipment.
Thanks to the Hope Church Prayer Team’s generous contribution, we have been able to purchase two sheep for Reagan, who has Cerebral Palsy. He was abandoned by his mother and lives with his grandmother. He is a student at Lumino School for Disabled Children, and Walter Lukiyana selected him to receive these sheep. This gift is a special blessing since caring for animals is known to have a therapeutic, comforting effect on children with disabilities. Walter is a teacher at the school and also part of our Kenyan Project Team. He has a ministry to disabled children in the nearby villages. Over the years, he has selected disabled children for our support, which has included donations of sheep, cows, and chickens, along with items from our containers. He personally oversees the care of the livestock, so their families can successfully breed the animals and earn much-needed income. |
Our Kenyan Team makes four facility visits a month – 2 for building project dedications and 2 to orphanages and schools in our network. They distribute items from the container, take food, and share the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ. At the Kongoni Primary school, Madam Matere, one of the teachers who attended the CEF training we sponsored, leads a Good News Club.
Those of us on the board are incredibly blessed to work with our expanding network of contacts in Kenya. We are deeply moved by the passion for the spiritual well-being of children shown by our own Kenyan team and the CEF volunteers. In the fall, we will be sponsoring 20 additional teachers to lead Good News Clubs. We will also be sponsoring 4 teachers to attend the 11-week CEF Leadership Training Institute to equip them to become full-time missionaries. We are excited to be sending 25 teens to Nairobi for Christian Youth in Action training, where they will learn to share Christ with children. We rejoice in being to serve out of our abundance and to bring joy in even the smallest gifts. | Ivy, Kongoni Special School Student. As a down’s syndrome child, she was rejected by her parents. She is happy with the gift of a new dress and a pencil. |
In May, we had two mission projects at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA. We hosted The Joy of Giving event for the Awana Program boys and their dads. The message focused on our mission, which is to share the love and Word of God in all our activities. The key verse is Proverbs 3:3 –“Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” I shared that while sending children fun and necessary things is certainly kind and a powerful expression of God’s love, when coupled with truth in the Word of God, we can draw others into a live-changing relationship with Jesus Christ.
On MVBC’s quarterly Missions Saturday, 15 volunteers turned empty frames into Scripture masterpieces, filled banana boxes with tee shirts, and made Spanish Scripture card packets. The 100 framed Scriptures and tee shirts are headed for Kenya, and the 600 packets of Scripture cards are going to Guatemala with our friend, Caitlin Terry.
